Is the Cisco MARS mission going into abort on non-Cisco security
devices?
Rivals asserting that’s so, Cisco declines to address ‘competitive rumors’
By
Ellen Messmer , Network World , 11/05/2009
Is
Cisco freezing support for any new non-Cisco security devices in the Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (MARS) appliance?
Cisco isn’t confirming it or denying it, but Cisco rivals claim they’re hearing from Cisco customers that Cisco won’t add support for additional non-Cisco security devices to MARS, a security information and event monitoring (SIEM) appliance used by about 4,000 Cisco customers. Since the SIEM market consists of equipment aimed at consolidating and correlating event information from multiple vendor equipment, several of Cisco’s rivals, including NitroSecurity and Q1 Labs, contend Cisco MARS will lose its relevance if Cisco freezes support for non-Cisco appliances.
“As of a certain timeframe, they’ll support what they support, and that’s it,” claims Jerry Skurla, vice president of marketing at SIEM vendor NitroSecurity. The SIEM vendor claims to be hearing this from Cisco customers and others in industry. Skurla admits he doesn’t know the specific timeframe but NitroSecurity yesterday kicked off a so-called “MARS Migration Program” targeting Cisco SIEM customers. READ MORE.

Ice Cream Maker Paying For Your Tweets To Save Honeybees
By MG Siegler
Back in August, we covered the launch of TwitCause
, a service not unlike Causes on Facebook, only built on top of Twitter. Basically, they find a cause to support (partially based on community feedback) and use Twitter to drive awareness for it. They also ask that you donate some money if you find the cause worthy. But today brings a new little twist: A sponsor willing to pay for any Twitter user who tweet out their support for a cause. Ice cream maker Häagen-Dazs has stepped up to do this to try and save honeybees.
Perhaps you’ve heard the stories
over the past several years about honeybees mysteriously vanishing around the world in large numbers. The root cause is believed to be something called Colony Collapse Disorder, which causes bees to stray from their hives and die. This is bad news since honeybees are vital to pollinating a lot of different types of foods we eat. They’re also vital to making ice cream, which is why Häagen-Dazs is supporting this TwitCause.
Starting today and running through November 11, Häagen-Dazs will pay $1 for the first 500 people that tweet everyday with the hashtag #HelpHoneyBees. The money will go towards both a UC Davis research project to further look into Colony Collapse Disorder, as well as help fund the Häagen-Dazs Honey Bee Haven, which aims to teach people about how to create their own honeybee farms.

Artist, seamstress, performance artist, and activist Rachel Znerold appears to have to her hands on a lot of different things.
She applies multiple layers of mixed media to build wonderfully tactile and colorful visual works. She resembles deconstructed and vintage materials to create hand-sewn fashion pieces. And she is a founding member of fAction SF, a collective of women designers and artists who use fashion and performance art as the medium for creating social change.
We recently caught up with this busy-bee with our Back Talk questions. Check out her answers here.

NitroSecurity grabs a great hit in The Tech Herald!
Adobe Squashes 29 Vulnerabilities with Single Update
On Tuesday, Adobe pushed almost as many vulnerability fixes as Microsoft, smashing 29 bugs with a single release. The issues fixed will depend on the software version, but between Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat, there were plenty of flaws to go around.
The patches released by Adobe correct vulnerabilities on UNIX, Macintosh, and Windows platforms. Most of the vulnerabilities addressed in this quarterly update center on code execution flaws, thirteen of them to be exact, where malicious PDF files were used to distribute Malware or simply hijack a targeted system.

Willie Nelson’s Got a New Broadband Plan

Willie Nelson has tossed the satellite dish off the back of his corn-powered tour bus in favor of a little box that fuses wireless data cards from a variety of networks into a single connection.
Which is to say Willie is on the net again, seeing things he may never see again.
Satellite connections can be made anywhere, but they are expensive and have strict usage caps. Network data cards offer all-you-can eat broadband plans, but any given company’s — AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint — doesn’t work everywhere. The solution? Use an array of network data cards from several companies. What Nelson has done is to tie four wireless USB cards into a Mushroom Networks PortaBella 141, which makes them into a single, fast and robust connection that can power a roving or remote network.
