Broadband bonding patches together a bigger pipe with a price tag sized for small business.
By Dan O’Shea
Small businesses find it tough to get what they need from big telecom service providers, which more often create offerings with big businesses in mind–”one-size-fits-all” solutions that may or may not fit.
In many cases, that one size is a T-1 line. At 1.5 megabits per second, that’s faster than some business connection alternatives–but it also can cost as much as $1,000 per month. For the most part, service providers are not in a rush to develop a more flexible solution for small businesses that ultimately would subtract from their bottom lines. Fortunately, there’s a work-around: an approach called broadband bonding. Simply put, it allows two or more broadband lines to be bonded into a single, more capacious pipe. Broadband bonding variations are offered by several companies, one of which is Mushroom Networks, founded in 2004 as a spinoff from the University of California, San Diego. Read more!

The value of planning is immeasurable
By Don Schempp, Senior Vice President of Torrey Pines Bank
Jan 01, 2010
By necessity, local businesses and residents have tightened their belts and are delving into savings to get through these tough times.
These are good short-term solutions, but the important question is what will be the lessons that endure once the economy changes from downturn to recovery and eventually to growth and prosperity?
I’ve been in banking for almost 40 years and I’ve seen many recessionary periods and times of great prosperity. The common denominator in any economic cycle is that planning for the future is fundamental to achieving your financial goals. Read more!

Is the Cisco MARS mission going into abort on non-Cisco security
devices?
Rivals asserting that’s so, Cisco declines to address ‘competitive rumors’
By
Ellen Messmer , Network World , 11/05/2009
Is
Cisco freezing support for any new non-Cisco security devices in the Cisco Security Monitoring, Analysis and Response System (MARS) appliance?
Cisco isn’t confirming it or denying it, but Cisco rivals claim they’re hearing from Cisco customers that Cisco won’t add support for additional non-Cisco security devices to MARS, a security information and event monitoring (SIEM) appliance used by about 4,000 Cisco customers. Since the SIEM market consists of equipment aimed at consolidating and correlating event information from multiple vendor equipment, several of Cisco’s rivals, including NitroSecurity and Q1 Labs, contend Cisco MARS will lose its relevance if Cisco freezes support for non-Cisco appliances.
“As of a certain timeframe, they’ll support what they support, and that’s it,” claims Jerry Skurla, vice president of marketing at SIEM vendor NitroSecurity. The SIEM vendor claims to be hearing this from Cisco customers and others in industry. Skurla admits he doesn’t know the specific timeframe but NitroSecurity yesterday kicked off a so-called “MARS Migration Program” targeting Cisco SIEM customers. READ MORE.
